Argentina Trip 2008

It's Chilly in Chile...

Again, not trying to undermine the guy's blog but thought it would be interesting to just post what's been going on on this side of the Andes as we finish our leg of the trip (even though we apparently don't exist anymore and are now grayed-out on the top of this page...what's up with that? we're still on this continent!).

What a difference a couple of days makes. Across the Andes and into Chile, the temperature has dropped a bit and it's sweater weather here. As stated earlier in the comments, our trip across the Andes by bus was breath-taking. Once in the city we realized...we weren't in Argentina anymore. With a Los Angeles feel, every other corner has a Starbucks, McD's, KFC, Dunkin Donuts, etc...this coupled with the lack of a cafe culture...it's everything Dan hates. Seriously, if it weren't for the license plates, we could be in Chula Vista.

Today we took in some sights and visited the Central Mercado...Vicki only lasted about 15 minutes among the fish stalls.

Dinner was not good and we longed for the cerveza and empenadas of Argentina. The prices are somewhat higher too...our crappy dinner cost $45. We could have eaten like kings in Argentina for that price!

The dirty-underwear-in-our-hotel-room incident has really put us off. Also, the hotel offered to call us a cab tonight to go to dinner (because they told us the cabs were very unscrupulous) I agreed to let them call me a cab and halfway into our trip without realizing it, I discovered it was a hotel-connected driver. We were expected to pay the hotel for the cab four times what a cab would have cost (add $12 to that to the $45 dinner...we would have been better off at TGI Friday's! in the above pic). We're really, really not loving the hotel so tomorrow we are leaving for a nice B&B I found on Trip Advisor where they won't nickle-and-dime us and the price is a quarter of this hotel.

I just finished a marathon photo editing session and posted all the best pics to date at http://gallery.me.com/mattpan. Oh, and now I have to stop typing b/c this stupid hotel charges for internet and it's costing me too much...Later...

Oh, Vicki/Matt I haven't forgotten you! I hate hotels that "nickle and dime" you. Happened to me in Boston. I drove there and found out that there is no self parking. You HAD to use valet, which they charged you lots for. Oh well, you live and you learn right folks? ;)

Very nice photos Matt. I wish I could access the others on your site but for some reason I am unable. Maybe there is some trick, as I see that others are able. :(

Sorry that you & Vicky and Autumn & Chris are in black in white now! As on Big Brother...it looks as though you all got voted off the blog! And yet, here you still are. :)

sorry bout the black and white thing. it's a computer error; only chris and autumn are supposed to be in black and white.
everyone--when you look at the blog, imagine matt and vicki in color!
also, the hotel is that bad, matt? isn't it subsidized by rewards points? maybe you can stay checked in the hotel AND check into the B&B. that way the crappy hotel doesn't make any more money off others. that's sticking it to the man!

Sorry Matt, I will make you color for the time being just like in the wizard of oz, that is until you return to real life at home in B&W.... ha ha... yeah thats about it...

Yes, Dan, the first two nights of our Sheraton were subsidized so we stayed...we canceled the final night (we would have to pay $200 for it; instead we are now in a very nice B&B in a residential area).

Also, Dan, do you have my little blue bag of stuff? I last lent it to you for the laundry and never saw it again.
